DEBUTING FROM PARIS: DD01 MYKITA / DAMIR DOMA
What began with a more than three years in-depth study of forms, colours and surfaces made its debut last wednesday at Paris Fashion week: DD01, the first pair of a series of eyewear we co-created with the croatian born designer Damir Doma.
The set up at the l’école nationale supérieure des beaux-art, where the show took place was very special – old wall paintings met with Damir Doma’s new collection, which was all about proportions and the mixture of textures such as leather, silk and linen. The location was the perfect background for the launch of our circular silhouette, made of stainless steel and horn.
What is striking about the new glasses is the usage and the melange of precious material: the combination of cool stainless steel and warm natural horn creates both visual and haptic contrast reminiscent of the characteristic mixture of coarse, stiff fabric and soft flowing textures in Damir Doma’s collections. Have a look at the collection and the glasses on the runway here:
The result is a futuristic look that elevates the recurring round motif in Doma’s work to another level. “This particular shape perfectly rounds up the Damir Doma look. From the very beginning, our aim was to translate the traditional shape into something modern and create an iconic object,” said Damir Doma after the show. At the same time, DD01 is a historic reference to the round glasses worn by the intellectual avant-garde throughout time.
The beauty of DD01 lies not in hiding its construction but in revealing it. Typical of MYKITA frames, all of the components are cut out of high-quality stainless steel, coated in gold, platinum or graphite, developed from flat metal sheets and only transformed into a threedimensional object by bending and folding. The horn rings, visible at the front and at the back, are encompassed by the frame and openly reveal the structure of the glasses – a reminiscent of the layerings in Damir Doma’s fashion designs.
In a complex process, the rings are produced from eight different millimetre-thin horn plates combined with each other to create the individual blend of tones. The natural horn is available in the colours grey-white or grey-anthracite with corresponding grey, brown or black lenses, or as a correction frame. All lenses are from the traditional lens manufacturer ZEISS.
The glasses will be available in all MYKITA shops, the Damir Doma flagship store as well as selected opticians and fashion stores from spring 2013.
Take a look at the entire collection on Damir Doma’s website. We also had a closer look backstage, you can see all pic’s on the MYKITA Facebook site. A detailed interview with the designer and Moritz Krueger, Creative Director and CEO of MYKITA about the collaboration will follow soon.
